On November 11th the Starr Trust held its third Starr Hub, BN Athlete, at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy, which heard from inspiring locals who take a far from conventional look at what it means to be an Athlete in the BN post code area.Created by the Trust earlier this year, Starr Hubs are a cross between dynamic networking and inspiring talks for young people and professionals in the BN post code area.Speakers at the event which included Jadey Yesilada, player in the Albion’s Powerchair Football Squad and inspiration for Jadey’s Dream, talked about the importance of attitude. Most had challenges or perceived limitations that became their greatest asset. These included cerebral palsy, visual impairment, arthritis, Crohn’s disease, lack of confidence and special needs.Starr Trust Director Darren said: “We wanted to challenge the way people think about athletics and sports, so our speakers were dancers and performers and players in disability teams, as well as ordinary people who had chosen to take on a huge sporting challenge. We learned that attitude is the most important element of reaching your sporting goals, not allowing limitations to hold you back. Each of our speakers has an amazing superpower which has allowed them to far exceed their physical conditions and redefine what it means to be an athlete today.”The event was attended by young people from BACA, Hove Park and other local schools, their parents and local business people, including representatives from Albion in the Community, Marina Studios and the Varndean College Vocational Training course. The event included a prize-winning dance routine by Stereoshok and a spirited performance by Unified Rhythm samba band - an integrated carnival arts music group based in Brighton and comprising of mainstream and special educational needs young people.
