The tenth annual charity Golf Day was held on 10th September 2021 at the prestigious Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate, and raised an incredible £6500 to help young people in Sussex.
19 teams (76 golfers) from Sussex, Kent and Hampshire businesses came together to enjoy a fantastic day out to help raise funds for the Starr Trust. The day teed off after breakfast in the club house followed by a shotgun start on the beautiful 18-hole award winning Waterfall course.
Plumpton Green based Bedlam Brewery were the thirst-quenching beer sponsor on the day, providing cans of their finest pale ale and pilsner. The Starr Trust team whizzed around the course in a decorated golf buggy selling the beer to teams keeping them refreshed during the day!
Young Sports Starr, 18 year old Spike, was kindly supporting the event all day too. Teams donated to enter a ‘Beat the Starr’ competition, with only 12 players beating Spike by getting closer to the hole.
There were a variety of competitions throughout the day including closest to pin and longest drive. Players retired to the historic club house, built in 1840 in Horsham and later transferred brick by brick to its current rural location in 1993, when it opened as a golf club. Teams heard from the Starr Trust Chairman, Rob Starr, who talked about how the charity aim to support even more young people in the coming months and years ahead, as well as introducing Spike to share his story of how the Trust has helped him achieve his golfing successes over the years. Awards were presented, bids were made on fantastic auction prizes and a delicious BBQ dinner was served to finish off a fun filled day on the course.
The winning team was Gardner & Scardifield, Lancing with runners up TPG Sports Events in Brighton, followed closely by local Brighton supporters Alan Pook and friends. The winning individual was Paul Gargan of Brighton with an impressive 44 points.
William Lewry, from our main sponsor IEP Financial based in Hove, said
“I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all for putting on a great event! Everyone enjoyed themselves and are a lot more familiar with the charity now too and will be supporting the Starr Trust going forward. What a talent Spike is too!”
Our event organiser Tracey Starr said
"As ever we are incredibly grateful for everyone’s support and delighted at how much money we managed to raise. All staff at Mannings Heath, especially Simon and Kate, deserve a massive thanks as they really went above and beyond to make the day run smoothly."
